In Android, when displaying an image with local uri, react-native seems to fail to rotate it according to Exif.
Images on iOS seem like they are being rotated, so this does not seem like a consistent behaviour.
For instance, when taking a picture on a Samsung Galaxy S6, and displaying it with code like below, image does not have a correct orientation.
```javascript
<Image source={{uri: "file:/storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera/20160106_171628.jpg"}} />
As seen [here](http://frescolib.org/docs/resizing-rotating.html#auto-rotation), Fresco can do all the work for us (hence this very simple PR).
I tested it on Samsung Galaxy S6 (lollipop), Galaxy S4 (kitkat) and Moto X Style (marshmallow).
I have written an example that fetches images uri from the Java side and then display them in a list view.
React Native currently exposes the iOS layer shadow properties more-or-less directly, however there are a number of problems with this:
1) Performance when using these properties is poor by default. That's because iOS calculates the shadow by getting the exact pixel mask of the view, including any tranlucent content, and all of its subviews, which is very CPU and GPU-intensive.
2) The iOS shadow properties do not match the syntax or semantics of the CSS box-shadow standard, and are unlikely to be possible to implement on Android.
3) We don't expose the `layer.shadowPath` property, which is crucial to getting good performance out of layer shadows.
This diff solves problem number 1) by implementing a default `shadowPath` that matches the view border for views with an opaque background. This improves the performance of shadows by optimizing for the common usage case. I've also reinstated background color propagation for views which have shadow props - this should help ensure that this best-case scenario occurs more often.
For views with an explicit transparent background, the shadow will continue to work as it did before ( `shadowPath` will be left unset, and the shadow will be derived exactly from the pixels of the view and its subviews). This is the worst-case path for performance, however, so you should avoid it unless absolutely necessary. **Support for this may be disabled by default in future, or dropped altogether.**
For translucent images, it is suggested that you bake the shadow into the image itself, or use another mechanism to pre-generate the shadow. For text shadows, you should use the textShadow properties, which work cross-platform and have much better performance.
Problem number 2) will be solved in a future diff, possibly by renaming the iOS shadowXXX properties to boxShadowXXX, and changing the syntax and semantics to match the CSS standards.
Problem number 3) is now mostly moot, since we generate the shadowPath automatically. In future, we may provide an iOS-specific prop to set the path explicitly if there's a demand for more precise control of the shadow.
We used to only cache the `dependencies` and `name` of a Module but we were actually accessing two more fields (async dependencies and the `isHaste` field) which meant we were always reading every single file from disk. In D2644383 I noticed that but realized that the Promise was cached, meaning we would read every file once *per instance* and I didn't think about cross-instance reads over time. My initial version added more caching (but also missed the `isHaste` field) but then I got rid of the cache call for `dependencies`. So my change from before didn't make anything worse but it also didn't make anything better. This change now caches everything until the contents of the file actually changes.
One consequence we didn't predict after introducing the Internal Transform Pipeline, was that when the workers would get started, we won't require the external transformer the user specified up until the first time each worker received a job. There're 2 visible consequences of this: (1) the transform progress bar seems to get stuck for about 5 seconds the first time the packager receives a request and (2) the first N (# of cores) HMR requests take way longer (about 4 seconds with FB's transformer instead of << 1 second) as we need to require lots of modules.
This diff creates a temporary file for the js transformer workers that requires the user-specified transform file eagerly.
That makes sure workers have imported babel and the transforms before receiving the first request.
There are better ways to do this, like adding an `init()` method to the workers and call that eagerly. I will follow with another diff doing that.
I'm working on deploying haste2 with jest. This updates all the files that require changes for this to work and they are backwards compatible with the current version of jest.
* package.json was just outdated. I think haste1's liberal handling with collisions made this a "non-issue"
* env.js didn't properly set up ErrorUtils, also unsure why that isn't a problem in jest right now already?
* some things were mocking things they shouldn't
* Because of the regex that matches against providesModule and System.import, it isn't possible to list module names more than once. We have multiple tests reusing the same providesModule ids and using System.import with modules that only exist virtually within that test. Splitting up the strings makes the regexes work (we do the same kind of splitting on www sometimes if we need to) and using different providesModule names in different test files fixes the problem. I think the BundlesLayoutIntegration-test is going to be deleted, so this doesn't even matter.
Blending semitransparent pixels against their background is fairly a fairly expensive operation on mobile GPUs. To reduce blending, React Native has a system called "background color propagation", where the background color of parent views is automatically inherited by child views unless explicitly overridden. This means that translucent pixels can be blended directly against a known background color, avoiding the need to do this dynamically on the GPU.
In practice, this is only useful for views that do their own drawing, which is basically just `<Image/>` and `<Text/>` components, and for image components it only really matters when the image has an alpha component.
The automatic background propagation is a bit of a hack, and often does the wrong thing - for example if a view overflows its bounds, or if it overlaps a sibling, the background color will often be incorrect and need to be manually disabled. Because the only place that it provides a significant performance benefit is for text, this diff disables the behavior for everything except `<Text/>` nodes. It might still be useful for `<Image/>` nodes too, but looking through the examples in UIExplorer, the number of places where it does the wrong thing for images outnumbers the cases where it provides significant reduction in blending.
Note that this diff does not prevent you from eliminating blending on image components by manually setting an opaque background color, nor does it stop you from disabling color propagation on text components by manually setting a transparent background.
Fixes a terrible bug due to which when Hot Loading enabled when the user reloads we'll serve them the first `hot` bundle he requested. This happened because when HMR enabled we bailed out after sending the HMR updates and didn't rebuild any of the bundles the user requested before. As a consequence, when they reload we'd sent him the first and only one we ever built.
The fix is to tweak the hmr listener to return a promise. This way we can run the remaining code on the file change listener just after the HMR stuff finishes. We need to do it this way to avoid the remaining stuff to compete for CPU with the HMR one and give the best possible experience when HMR is enabled.
By doing this we fix 2 problems:
1. We use the same url, both the first time the simulator starts with Hot Loading disabled (no `hot` attribute), and after HL has been enabled and then disabled ('hot=false'). By doing so, the packager will rebuild more than one bundle as file changes. We could have ignored this attribute on the packager but I'd rather not contaminate the server with it and instead make the clients send only 2 types of URLs.
2. The code on `RCTBatchedBridge.m` that decides whether or not to enable HMR does so by looking at presence of the query string parameter `hot`. If the parameter is present, even when it's false, it will try to enable HL, which is wrong.
We want to support Hot Loading on the packager itself instead of on the transformer. This will allow us to enable it on OSS (and for any scripting language, yay!).
For now to enable Hot Loading the packager's internals transforms need to be manually enabled (start packager with `--enable-internal-transforms`). I think the internal pipeline should always be enabled as it doesn't affect performance if there're no transforms and the user can disable Hot Loading through the setting on the app though. I'll tweak this on a follow up commit.
Since Facebook relies on BUCK to build and run iOS app, we probably won't use `run-ios` internally. That's why I'm putting this as public PR instead of internal diff.
Before this diff we were only accepting the module that was modified but the user. This works fine as long as the user doesn't modify the dependencies a module has but once he starts doing so the HMR runtime may fail when updating modules' code because they might might a few dependencies. For instance, if the user changes the `src` a `Image` has to reference an image (using the new asset system) that wasn't on the original bundle the user will get a red box. This diff addresses this by diffing the modules the app currently has with the new ones it should have and including all of them on the HMR update. Note this diffing is only done when the we realize the module that was modified changed it's dependencies so there's no additional overhead on this change.
For OSS we offer `transformer.js` which people can use out of the box if they're writing ES6 code. For those people, `transformer.js` will also run the internal transforms`. However they might want to tune the transforms, or even write the code on another language that compiles to Javascript and use a complete different transformer. On those cases we'll need to run the external transforms first and pipe the output through the internal transforms. Note that the order it's important as the internal transforms assume the code is written in JS, though the original code could be on other scripting languages (CoffeeScript, TypeScript, etc).
Both iOS and Android currently support some sort of native pull to refresh control but the API was very different. I tried implementing a component based on PullToRefreshViewAndroid but that works on both platforms.
I liked the idea of wrapping the ListView or ScrollView with the PullToRefreshView component and allow styling the refresh view with platform specific props if needed. I also like the fact that 'refreshing' is a controlled prop so there is no need to keep a ref to the component or to the stopRefreshing function.
It is a pretty rough start so I'm looking for feedback and ideas to improve on the API before cleaning up everything.
On iOS we could probably deprecate the onRefreshStart property of the ScrollView and implement the native stuff in a PullToRefreshViewManager. We could then add props to customize the look of the UIRefreshControl (tintColor). We could also deprecate the Android only component and remove it later.
The implementation of the `methodQueue` lazy initializer in `RCTModuleData` could result in the queue being set twice, because calling `methodQueue` for a module that hasn't been instantiated would call `RCTModuleData.instance` to create the module, which itself calls `methodQueue`.
It's not clear if this was causing a bug, but it may be related to an occasional bug where the `RCTViewManager.methodQueue` returns nil.
This diff adds a `getSize()` method to `Image` to retrieve the width and height of an image prior to displaying it. This is useful when working with images from uncontrolled sources, and has been a much-requested feature.
In order to retrieve the image dimensions, the image may first need to be loaded or downloaded, after which it will be cached. This means that in principle you could use this method to preload images, however it is not optimized for that purpose, and may in future be implemented in a way that does not fully load/download the image data.
A fully supported way to preload images will be provided in a future diff.
The API (separate success and failure callbacks) is far from ideal, but until we agree on a unified standard, this was the most conventional way I could think of to implement it. If it returned a promise or something similar, it would be unique among all such APIS in the framework.
Please note that this has been a long time coming, in part due to much bikeshedding about what the API should look like, so while it's not unlikely that the API may change in future, I think having *some* way to do this is better than waiting until we can define the "perfect" way.
We don't (yet) treat these the same as any other modules because we still have special resolution rules for them in the packager allowing the use of `providesModule`, but I believe this allows people to use npm react in their RN projects and not have duplicate copies of React. Fixesfacebook/react-native#2985.
This relies on fbjs 0.6, which includes `.flow` files alongside the `.js` files to allow them to be typechecked without additional configuration. This also uses react 0.14.5, which shims a couple of files (as `.native.js`) to avoid DOM-specific bits. Once we fix these in React, we will use the same code on web and native. Hopefully we can also remove the packager support I'm adding here for `.native.js`.
This diff is not the desired end state for us – ideally the packager would know nothing of react or fbjs, and we'll get there eventually by not relying on `providesModule` in order to load react and fbjs modules. (fbjs change posted here but not merged yet: https://github.com/facebook/fbjs/pull/84.)
This should also allow relay to work seamlessly with RN, but I haven't verified this.
Before this this when a file was changed besides sending the HMR update we rebuild every single bundle that the packager had build (to serve it faster when the user hit cmd+r). Since when hot loading is enabled we don't do cmd+r all this work was pointless (except for when you're developing multiple apps using the same packager instance at the same time, which we can assume is very uncommon). As a consequence, the HMR update was competing with the rebundling job making HMR quite slow (i.e.: on one huge internal app it took up to 6s for the HMR changes to get applied).
So, this diff tweaks the file change listener so that we don't rebundle nor invoke the fileWatchers (use for live reload which is also useless when hot load is enabled) when hot loading is enabled. Also, it makes the HMR listener more high pri than the other listeners so that the HMR dev experience is as good as it can get.
Implement all the necessary glue code for several diffs submitted before to get Hot Loading work end to end:
- Simplify `HMRClient`: we don't need to make it stateful allowing to enable and disable it because both when we enable and disable the interface we need to reload the bundle.
- On the native side we introduced a singleton to process the bundle URL. This new class might alter the url to include the `hot` attribute. I'm not 100% sure this is the best way to implement this but we cannot use `CTLSettings` for this as it's are not available on oss and I didn't want to contaminate `RCTBridge` with something specific to hot loading. Also, we could potentially use this processor for other things in the future. Please let me know if you don't like this approach or you have a better idea :).
- Use this processor to alter the default bundle URL and request a `hot` bundle when hot loading is enabled. Also make sure to enable the HMR interface when the client activates it on the dev menu.
- Add packager `hot` option.
- Include gaeron's `react-transform` on Facebook's JS transformer.
The current implementation couples a bit React Native to this feature because `react-transform-hmr` is required on `InitializeJavaScriptAppEngine`. Ideally, the packager should accept an additional list of requires and include them on the bundle among all their dependencies. Note this is not the same as the option `runBeforeMainModule` as that one only adds a require to the provided module but doesn't include all the dependencies that module amy have that the entry point doesn't. I'll address this in a follow up task to enable asap hot loading (9536142)
I had to remove 2 `.babelrc` files from `react-proxy` and `react-deep-force-update`. There's an internal task for fixing the underlaying issue to avoid doing this horrible hack (t9515889).
There's quite a bit of code scattered around the packager regarding ignoring the `providesModule` Haste pragma in any file that isn't in `react-native`, `react-tools` or `parse`. There is even a (passing) test case.
However, there's an edge case.
Take, for example, `fbjs`. It has a module inside of it called `ErrorUtils`. `react-relay` requires this file normally, in Common.JS style, by doing `require('fbjs/libs/ErrorUtils')`. But when `react-native` attempts to require `ErrorUtils` using the HasteModule format (in it's JavaScript initialization), it resolves the `fbjs` `ErrorUtils` module, instead of RN's `ErrorUtils`.
This happens, it turns out, because when a module is read (in `Module._read`), it's not caring about whether or not it should pay attention to `providesModule`, and is just assigning the `providesModule` value as the id of the module no matter what. Then when `Module.getName` is called, it will always use that `data.id` that was set, thus creating the wrong dependency tree.
Default behavior should be unchanged.
If we queue up a bunch of expensive tasks during an interaction, the default
`InteractionManager` behavior would execute them all in one synchronous loop at
the end the JS event loop via one `setImmediate` call, blocking the JS thread
the entire time.
The `setDeadline` addition in this diff enables an option to only execute tasks
until the `eventLoopRunningTime` is hit (added to MessageQueue/BatchedBridge),
allowing the queue execution to be paused if an interaction starts in between
tasks, making the app more responsive.
Additionally, if a task ends up generating a bunch of additional tasks
asynchronously, the previous implementation would execute these new tasks after
already scheduled tasks. This is often fine, but I want it to fully resolve
async tasks and all their dependencies before making progress in the rest of the
queue, so I added support for `type PromiseTask = {gen: () => Promise}` to do
just this. It works by building a stack of queues each time a `PromiseTask` is
started, and pops them off the stack once they are resolved and the queues are
processed.
I also pulled all of the actual queue logic out of `InteractionManager` and into
a new `TaskQueue` class to isolate concerns a bit.
Most of the time - especially during app startup - when we call UIManager.manageChildren(), we are actually just adding the first set of children to a newly created view.
This case is already optimized for in the JS code, by memoizing index arrays at various sizes, but this is not especially efficient since it is still sending an array of indices with each call that could be easily inferred on the native side instead.
I've added a hybrid native/JS optimization that improves the performance for this case. It's not a huge win in terms of time saved, but benchmarks show improvements in the ~1% range for several of the app startup metrics.
Thanks to the new lazy initialization system for modules, `RCTDidCreateNativeModules` no longer does what the name implies.
Previously, `RCTDidCreateNativeModules` was fired after all native modules had been initialized. Now, it simply fires each time the bridge is reloaded. Modules are created on demand when they are needed, so most of the assumptions about when `RCTDidCreateNativeModules` will fire are now incorrect.
This diff deprecates `RCTDidCreateNativeModules`, and adds a new notification, `RCTDidInitializeModuleNotification`, which fires each time a module a new module is instantiated.
If you need to access a module at any time you can just call `-[bridge moduleForClass:]` and the module will be instantiated on demand. If you want to access a module *only* after it has already been instantiated, you can use the `RCTDidInitializeModuleNotification` notification.
A component can be backed by native "node" that can change its internal state, which would result in a new UI after the next layout. Since js has no way of knowing that this has happened it wouldn't trigger a layout if nothing in js world has changed. Therefore we need a way how to trigger layout from native code.
This diff does it by adding methods `layoutIfNeeded` on the uimanager and `isBatchActive` on the bridge.
When `layoutIfNeeded` is called it checks whether a batch is in progress. If it is we do nothing, since at it's end layout happens. If a batch is not in progress we immidiately do layout.
I went with the easiest way how to implement this - `isBatchActive` is a public method on the bridge. It's not ideal, but consistent with other methods for modules.
The `.interpolate()` API of Animated values is quite effective to accomplish transformations based on a single animated value, but currently there is a class of animations that is impossible: animations being driven by more than one value.
Usage would be like the following:
```js
getInitialState: function() {
return {
panY: new Animated.Value(0),
offset: new Animated.Value(0),
};
}
```
```js
var scale = Animated.add(panY, offset).interpolate({
inputRange: [...],
outputRange: [...],
});
```
I have a real use case for this, and I cannot think of any way to accomplish what I need without an API like this.
The animation I am trying to accomplish is I have a PanResponder being used to detect both x and y panning. The y-axis panning drives a 3d sroll-like animation (which we can call `panY`), and the x-axis panning is driving a "swipe-to-remove" animation (
Summary:
The JavaScript ecosystem doesn't have the notion of a built-in native module loader. Even Node is decoupled from its module loader. The module loader system is just JS that runs on top of the global `process` object which has all the built-in goodies.
Additionally there is no such thing as a global require. That is something unique to our providesModule system. In other module systems such as node, every require is contextual. Even registered npm names are localized by version.
The only global namespace that is accessible to the host environment is the global object. Normally module systems attaches itself onto the hooks provided by the host environment on the global object.
Currently, we have two forms of dispatch that reaches directly into the module system. executeJSCall which reaches directly into require. Everything now calls through the BatchedBridge module (except one RCTLog edge case that I will fix). I propose that the executors calls directly onto `BatchedBridge` through an instance on the global so that everything is guaranteed to go through it. It becomes the main communication hub.
I also propose that we drop the dynamic requires inside of MessageQueue/BatchBridge and instead have the modules register themselves with the bridge.
executeJSCall was originally modeled after the XHP equivalent. The XHP equivalent was designed that way because the act of doing the call was the thing that defined a dependency on the module from the page. However, that is not how React Native works.
The JS side is driving the dependencies by virtue of requiring new modules and frameworks and the existence of dependencies is driven by the JS side, so this design doesn't make as much sense.
The main driver for this is to be able to introduce a new module system like Prepack's module system. However, it also unlocks the possibility to do dead module elimination even in our current module system. It is currently not possible because we don't know which module might be called from native.
Since the module system now becomes decoupled we could publish all our providesModule modules as npm/CommonJS modules using a rewrite script. That's what React Core does.
That way people could use any CommonJS bundler such as Webpack, Closure Compiler, Rollup or some new innovation to create a JS bundle.
This diff expands the executeJSCalls to the BatchedBridge's three individual pieces to make them first class instead of being dynamic. This removes one layer of abstraction. Hopefully we can also remove more of the things that register themselves with the BatchedBridge (various EventEmitters) and instead have everything go through the public protocol. Introduce a new Polyfill module to load bundles. This polyfill contains the function to which System.import gets transformed into. It works similarly to require in the way it's registered. It keeps track of the bundles that have ever been requested using promises, either fulfilled or not. The use of promises makes the implementation quite easy as we don't need to differenciate whether the request has been started or not.
There're a couple of follow up steps that still need to get done:
- Included this polyfill on the ones we automatically include on the bundle.
- Modify the transform to include the modules the user is actually requesting and pipe that through loadBundles so that the promise, once resolved, has the ordered list of modules the user requested.
- Implement the actual native code that loads a bundle. This shouldn't be that taught as native will be able to assume it will never receive the same request twice.
In the open source React Native implementation, the recommended approach for importing modules is by importing a the `ReactNative` object, which includes all available modules.
This is rather inefficient because it ends up initializing all the JS modules, even if you don't use them.
This diff switches the properties of the `ReactNative ` object to lazy getter functions, which defers the `require` until the module is actually requested.
This diff fixes an occasional JS exception thrown by Touchable.js when it attempts to transitions to the RESPONDER_ACTIVE_LONG_PRESS_IN state from the RESPONDER_INACTIVE_PRESS_IN state.
Although I wasn't able to reproduce the error while testing, I was able to identify the likely cause: the LONG_PRESS_DETECTED state transition is triggered by a timer that is started on touch-down. This timer should be cancelled if the gesture is interrupted, however I identified a code path where the state can be changed to RESPONDER_INACTIVE_PRESS_IN without the longPressDelayTimeout being cancelled.
To fix this, I've added some logic to cancel the timer in that case. I've also added a test for the error scenario that will display a redbox in __DEV__ mode, but will fail gracefully in production mode.
Currently, we wait to invoke `-flushUIBlocks` until the JavaScript batch to native has completed. This means we may be waiting an unnecessarily long time to perform view hierarchy changes and prop changes.
By instead invoking this after each chunk of enqueued UI blocks, we can perform some updates more eagerly, increasing our utilization of the main thread while splitting up the amount of time we spend running upon it.
This shouldn't affect layout, which is still tied to `-batchDidComplete`, so any visual inconsistencies should be limited to prop changes, which seems acceptable for the dramatic improvement in performance.
RCTUIManager is a public module with several useful methods, however, unlike most such modules, it does not have a JS wrapper that would allow it to be required directly.
Besides making it more cumbersome to use, this also makes it impossible to modify the UIManager API, or smooth over differences between platforms in the JS layer without breaking all of the call sites.
This diff adds a simple JS wrapper file for the UIManager module to make it easier to work with.
Summary: This PR includes a working interface to Android's `elevation` property implemented as an RN style. Elevation is the only (easy) [platform-supported way to create shadows](http://developer.android.com/training/material/shadows-clipping.html). For it to work note that you must be running on Android 5.0+, and add `elevation` to a view with a `backgroundColor` set. These are platform limitations.
This PR is not intended to be merged in its current state, but rather to inform the discussion from #2768. At a minimum, before merging we would need to add the elevation style to the docs and rebase this to master (**EDIT** I have now rebased on master because from v0.14.2 too many commits were being pulled in -- haven't tested it since the rebase though). Additionally, it might be good to add tests, although I couldn't find any for the Android code. I'm happy to get that done if this feature gets signed off by the React Native team.
Finally, as I argued in #2768 I think that `elevation` is a useful abstraction ov
The `bridge.modules` dictionary provides access to all native modules, but this API requires that every module is initialized in advance so that any module can be accessed.
This diff introduces a better API that will allow modules to be initialized lazily as they are needed, and deprecates `bridge.modules` (modules that use it will still work, but should be rewritten to use `bridge.moduleClasses` or `-[bridge moduleForName/Class:` instead.
The rules are now as follows:
* Any module that overrides `init` or `setBridge:` will be initialized on the main thread when the bridge is created
* Any module that implements `constantsToExport:` will be initialized later when the config is exported (the module itself will be initialized on a background queue, but `constantsToExport:` will still be called on the main thread.
* All other modules will be initialized lazily when a method is first called on them.
These rules may seem slightly arcane, but they have the advantage of not violating any assumptions that may have been made by existing code - any module written under the original assumption that it would be initialized synchronously on the main thread when the bridge is created should still function exactly the same, but modules that avoid overriding `init` or `setBridge:` will now be loaded lazily.
I've rewritten most of the standard modules to take advantage of this new lazy loading, with the following results:
Out of the 65 modules included in UIExplorer:
* 16 are initialized on the main thread when the bridge is created
* A further 8 are initialized when the config is exported to JS
* The remaining 41 will be initialized lazily on-demand
- Removing mentions of the `__DEV__` environment variable
because it's not published/open source (yet).
This will be used while we experiment and should be maintained as the
I found that saveBundleAndMap and processBundle were over abstracted and
got in my way so I inlined it and removed the unit tests because the unit
test was testing trivial code that is likely to change interface.
I went with a separate build phase and a separate Bundle class even though
there are a lot of commonalities. I imagine that the requirements for
Prepack will continue to diverge. Especially for source maps but a larger
refactor could try to unify these a bit more. The fact that modules are
wrapped before the write phase seems to be an unfortunate architecture
that makes this difficult.
Native view recycling implementation based on limited pools of views.
In this diff I introduced new UIManager method: dropViews. Instead of removing views from tag->view maps when they are detached we keep them there until we get a call to dropViews with the appropriate tag. JS may keep a pool of object and selectively decide not to enqueue drop for certain views. Then instead of removing those views it may decide to reuse tag that has been previously allocated for a view that is no longer in use.
Special handling is required for layout-only nodes as they only can transition from layout-only to non-layout-only (reverse transition hasn't been implemented). Because of that we'd loose benefits of view flattening if we decide to recycle existing non-layout-only view as a layout-only one.
This diff provides only a simple and manual method for configuring pools by calling `ReactNativeViewPool.configure` with a dict from native view name to the view count. Note that we may not want recycle all the views (e.g. when we render mapview we don't want to keep it in memory after it's detached)
Changed ListView to use onLayout and onContentSizeChange (new) events instead of measure. Updated ScrollView implementation to support contentSizeChange event with an implementation based on onLayout attached to the content view. For RecyclerViewBackedScrollView we need to generate that event directly as it doesn't have a concept of content view.
This greatly improves performance of ListView that uses RecyclerViewBackedScrollView
I had previously assumed (based on past experience and common wisdom) that `[UIImage imageWithData:]` was safe to call concurrently and/or off the main thread, but it seems that may not be the case (see https://github.com/AFNetworking/AFNetworking/pull/2815).
This diff replaces `[UIImage imageWithData:]` with ImageIO-based decoding wherever possible, and ensures that it is called on the main thread wherever that's not possible/convenient.
I'm currently building an app that changes metadata, does some resizes, maybe watermarking ...etc. I want to use RCTImageStoreManager to store the original image in memory and allow me to command different modifications from javascript as it gives me more flexibility. As RCTImageEditingManager does for example.
But currently the RTCImageStoreManager uses UIImage to store the image, the problem is that UIImage losses metadata.
So i suggest we change it to NSData.
Additionally I added a method to remove an image from the store.
Implementation details :
We create a ReactTextInlineImageShadowNode whenever an Image is embedded within a Text context.
That uses the same parsing code as ReactImageView (copied, not shared) to parse the source property to figure out the Uri where the resource is.
In ReactTextShadowNode we now look for the ReactTextInlineImageShadowNode and place a TextInlineImageSpan so that we can layout appropriately
Later at the time we go to setText on the TextView, we update that TextInlineImageSpan so that the proper Drawable (downloaded via Fresco) can be shown
Summary: In accordance with the unwritten rule that any API that takes a callback should also return a promise, I've changed `InteractionManager.runAfterInteractions()` to do just that.
```js
InteractionManager.runAfterInteractions(() => {
...

```
can become
```js
InteractionManager.runAfterInteractions().then(() => {
...
});
```
(but doesn't have to). Most importantly, though, this change enables code like
```js
doSomeUIStuff();
await InteractionManager.runAfterInteractions();
doSomeNonUIStuff();
```
which is nice.
Note: Because returning a `Promise` means the callback argument is now optional, the behaviour of the API is slightly changed, though not in a backwards-incompatible way (unless a consumer is in some way relying on the exception, but that would be insane).
The idea is to always load images from the same folder that we loaded JS bundle.
This doesn't change the current behavior, since `imageNamed:` inferred the
absolute path to the image from app's bundle, but now we make it explicit.
The benefit for OTA updates implementations is that they can simply ask RN
to load js from some `~/Documents/<build-id>/main.jsbundle` folder and RN will
look for images in `~/Documents/<build-id>/assets/`.
Note that for Android we will have to come out with a different plan, since
in prod we load images from built-in resources.
Summary: I'm planning to split up `DependencyResolver` into the react-native specific implementation of it and a new, generic resolver that is going to replace `node-haste` for jest and other places where we might need JS dependency resolution.
The plan is to split the two folders up so that:
* `Resolver` is the folder for all the react-native specific resolver code
* `DependencyResolver` will become a standalone library, eventually moving into a package called `node-haste`.
There is still a lot to be figured out. This is just the first diff of likely many. The current goal is to make `DependencyResolver` standalone to be able to create an instance of a resolver and resolve all dependencies for a file. This is when I can start integrating it more seriously with jest.
This diff simply moves a bunch of things around and turns `HasteModuleResolver` into an ES2015 class ( :) ).
Summary: From http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/runtime-changes.html
> Some device configurations can change during runtime (such as screen orientation, keyboard availability, and language). When such a change occurs, Android restarts the running Activity (onDestroy() is called, followed by onCreate()). The restart behavior is designed to help your application adapt to new configurations by automatically reloading your application with alternative resources that match the new device configuration.
However, in a React Native app, there is only a single activity for the entire app, unlike a single activity per screen in Android, and resources are not specific to orientation etc. Destroying activity means reloading the entire app. Most of the time, this is not the intended behaviour, and can cause data loss for the user if the developer doesn't disable it explicitly. I'm proposing to disable it by default.
Summary: public
Original github title: Exported a callback for native webview delegate method shouldStartLoadWithRequest
We have a requirement in our app, to open in mobile Safari, any http:// and https:// links displayed in a web view. Our web view is not full screen and is loaded with an HTML string from the backend. Displaying external content in that web view is outside of the scope of our app, so we open them in mobile Safari.
I've forked the WebView component and added a callback property, shouldStartLoadWithRequest, and modified the RCTWebView implementation of `webView:shouldStartLoadWithRequest:navigationType:`
to check if the shouldStartLoadWithRequest property is set.
If the property is set, `webView:shouldStartLoadWithRequest:navigationType:` passes the URL & navigationType to the callback. The callback is then able to ignore the request, redirect it, open a full screen web view to display the URL content, or even deep link to another app with LinkingIOS.openURL().
While implementing my own `RCTURLRequestHandler` I came across retain cycles in `RCTNetworkTask` when used with `RCTFileRequestHandler` and `RCTDataRequestHandler`.
The `NSBlockOperation` used in `RCTFileRequestHandler` and `RCTDataRequestHandler` could never be dealloc'ed because of a retain cycle.
And then the second issue was that those blocks were also strongly capturing the passed delegate which in this case is the `RCTNetworkTask` itself and then since the task was storing the block as a `requestToken`, the task could never be dealloc'ed as well.
Here are my proposed fixes. Let me know what you think.
Summary: A lot of people try to use a device as the very first thing when trying
out React Native. I've observed this at the developer workshop in Prague
and on Twitter.
However, developing on pre-API 21 devices is quite involved:
https://facebook.github.io/react-native/docs/running-on-device-android.html
I'm thinking we could recommend installing Android together with Android
studio. Android studio installs HAXM for you (hardware acceleration, without
this Google emulators are useless) and also creates and starts emulators.
So it would be quite a smooth experience similar to pressing 'Run' in Xcode.
We'd just need to integrate with Gradle so that installing the app also starts
the packager. I think that's something we should do in any case.
Probably an even better option is to build a React Native-specific tool that
lets you do everything you need: opens the Android SDK Manager, creates and
starts emulators, detects whether you have Genymotion and opens it, upgrades
node and npm etc.
We have code in place to ensure that a red box is displayed when bad arguments are sent to exported methods, however the methods were still being called with nil values for those arguments, resulting in crashes if the method wasn't set up to handle nil gracefully.
This diff ensures that methods will not be called if any of the argument conversion functions log an error. It also explicitly checks for nil output for arguments that are marked as nonnull.
```
JSBundleLoader jsBundleLoader = new JSBundleLoader() {
Override
public void loadScript(ReactBridge reactBridge) {
reactBridge.loadScriptFromFile("/sdcard/Download/index.android.bundle");
}
};
mReactInstanceManager = ReactInstanceManager.builder()
.setApplication(getApplication())
.setJSBundleLoader(jsBundleLoader)
.setJSMainModuleName("") /* necessary due to TODO(6803830) */
.addPackage(new MainReactPackage())
.setInitialLifecycleState(LifecycleState.RESUMED)

to prevent crashes if running on an unsupported architecture, but Xcode might
strip the symbol, even with `.no_dead_strip`, if there's no references to the

Replace it with an ugly `#if` that checks if it's any of the supported targets

Summary: There is no point in dispatching to main thread if there is nothing to do there.
This place gets called basically any time a repeating js timer fires, which doesn't imply UI changes (although usually that's why people setup timers).
Combined with previous diffs that makes us not generate empty blocks (nil instead), this could be minor perf win in some rare cases.
This also changes semantic of `reactBridgeDidFinishTransaction` call a bit. Previously it was done no matter if UI has changed or not.
I think it should be safe, since seems like callees really care only about views being laid out.

Summary: Previously `_bridgeTransactionListeners` were informed about `reactBridgeDidFinishTransaction` inside of one of the UI blocks.
That seems pretty arbitrary, doesn't really mean a "transaction" is really over (assuming transaction means all UI updates) and even when that block does nothing we still need to call these listeners, since there could be other UI blocks generated somewhere else!
So I've moved this call to a place that seemed better (=after all UI blocks are done), since all listeners are interested in knowing when layout has happened.

Summary: We have a use case in the development of our app, where we are rendering some HTML content in a web view. But this content comes from the back end, and varies in height. There are other components on the page, so it's not a full screen web view. We need to dynamically alter the web view height, to fit the HTML content without scrolling, and to push the non-web view content on the screen down.
The solution I came up with, was to use the _loadingFinish callback, to send the evaluation of the injectedJavaScript property back to the React Native side. In my example above, injecting 'document.getElement(elementId).offsetHeight' evaluates to the height of the element, with margins and borders applied, and once returned to the RN app, it can change the app state and cause the web view height to be adjusted.
