Get started with CotEditor

CotEditor is a Mac-only text editor designed for working with plain text—from programming to everyday scratch. It features a macOS-native interface and seamlessly integrates with system features such as Dark Mode, Versions, iCloud, and VoiceOver. It behaves in a subtle, yet intelligent way that feels right at home on macOS.

Work with diverse plain text

CotEditor accurately opens documents that typical text editors can’t handle. This includes files with nonstandard text encodings or mixed line-ending types. Moreover, it helps identify locations in the document that may need attention.

Capture document structure with syntax analysis

CotEditor highlights programming keywords, Markdown headings, HTML elements, and more, making your document’s structure easy to see at a glance. It also lists heading-level sections automatically so you can jump to the part you want.

Powerful find and replace

The find & replace feature in CotEditor not only supports regular expressions, but also shows a list of search results or highlights matched words in your document.
