<p><code>ReactTestUtils</code> makes it easy to test React components in the testing framework of your choice. At Facebook we use <a href="https://facebook.github.io/jest/">Jest</a> for painless JavaScript testing. Learn how to get started with Jest through the Jest website's <a href="http://facebook.github.io/jest/docs/tutorial-react.html#content">React Tutorial</a>.</p>

<p>Note:</p>
<p>Airbnb has released a testing utility called Enzyme, which makes it easy to assert, manipulate, and traverse your React Components' output. If you're deciding on a unit testing utility to use together with Jest, or any other test runner, it's worth checking out: <a href="http://airbnb.io/enzyme/">http://airbnb.io/enzyme/</a></p>

<h3><a class="anchor" name="shallow-rendering"></a>Shallow Rendering <a class="hash-link" href="#shallow-rendering">#</a></h3>
<p>Shallow rendering lets you render a component "one level deep" and assert facts about what its render method returns, without worrying about the behavior of child components, which are not instantiated or rendered. This does not require a DOM.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="#createrenderer"><code>createRenderer()</code></a></li>
<li><a href="#shallowrenderer.render"><code>shallowRenderer.render()</code></a></li>
<li><a href="#shallowrenderer.getrenderoutput"><code>shallowRenderer.getRenderOutput()</code></a></li>
</ul>
<p>Call <a href="#createrenderer"><code>createRenderer()</code></a> in your tests to create a shallow renderer. You can think of this as a "place" to render the component you're testing, and from which you can extract the component's output.</p>
<p><a href="#shallowrenderer.render"><code>shadowRenderer.render()</code></a> is similar to <a href="/react/docs/react-dom.html#render"><code>ReactDOM.render()</code></a> but it doesn't require DOM and only renders a single level deep. This means you can test components in isolated from how their children are implemented.</p>
<p>After <code>shadowRenderer.render()</code> has been called, you can use <a href="#shallowrenderer.getrenderoutput"><code>shallowRenderer.getRenderOutput()</code></a> to get the shallowly rendered output.</p>
<p>You can then begin to assert facts about the output. For example, if your component's render method returns:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-javascript" data-lang="javascript"><span class="o"><</span><span class="nx">div</span><span class="o">></span>

<span class="o"><</span><span class="nx">Subcomponent</span> <span class="nx">foo</span><span class="o">=</span><span class="s2">"bar"</span> <span class="o">/></span>
<span class="o"><</span><span class="err">/div></span>
</code></pre></div>
<p>Then you can assert:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-javascript" data-lang="javascript"><span class="kr">const</span> <span class="nx">renderer</span> <span class="o">=</span> <span class="nx">ReactTestUtils</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">createRenderer</span><span class="p">();</span>

<p>Shallow testing currently has some limitations, namely not supporting refs.</p>
<p>We also recommend checking out Enzyme's <a href="http://airbnb.io/enzyme/docs/api/shallow.html">Shallow Rendering API</a>. It provides a nicer higher-level API over the same functionality.</p>
