maciej simka 6f627f684b Split loadApplicationScript into initializeRuntime and loadBundle (#27844)
Summary:
This is the first of three PRs related to enabling multi-bundle support in React Native. More details, motivation and reasoning behind it can be found in RFC [here](https://github.com/react-native-community/discussions-and-proposals/issues/152).

Logic responsible for installing globals was pulled out from `loadApplicationScript` to `initializeRuntime` since it should be ran only once, what was left was renamed to `loadBundle`.

It's based on dratwas work from [here](https://github.com/callstack/react-native/tree/feat/multibundle/split-load-application), but applied to current `master` to avoid rebasing 3-months old branch and issues that come with that.

## Changelog

[Internal] [Changed] - split `loadApplicationScript` into `initializeRuntime` and `loadBundle` to enable multi-bundle support in the future
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/27844

Test Plan: Initialized new RN app with CLI, set RN to build from source and verified the still app builds and runs OK using code from this branch.

Rick Hanlon 52b3105f65 Implement RCTWarn equivalent on Android
Summary:
## Overview
This diff is an RFC to port a logging feature from iOS to Android.

Changelog: [Internal]

## Motivation
On iOS we have the following log functions and behaviors available for logging native warnings and errors:

- **Warnings** (`RCTLogWarn`)
  - Log level 'warn' to console
  - Display warning in LogBox
- **Errors** (`RCTLogError`)
  - Log level 'error' to console
  - Display a native RedBox (needs converted to show a LogBox if available)
- **Logs**
  - We also have `RCTLog`, `RCTTrace`, `RCTAdvice`, `RCTInfo`, which just log to the console.

In Java, we have:
- **Warnings**
  - **None**, added in this diff
- **Errors** (`DevSupportManager.showNewJavaError`)
  - Log level 'error' to console with `FLog.e`
  - Display a native RedBox (needs converted to show a LogBox if available
- **Logs**
  - `ReactSoftException` (crashes the app??)
  - `ReactNoCrashSoftException` (only logs??)
  - Others?

## Details

This diff adds a method to pair with `RCTLogWarn`, `DevSupportManager.showNewJavaWarning`, which will log to the console and show a LogBox warning if LogBox is available.

## Concerns

I have a few concerns/questions about the state of logging on Android:
- Should/can we move all of the logging to it's own class, like how RCTLog works?
- Why does some logging happen on DevSupportManager and some in other classes?
- If we moved it all to it's own class, how could we access the reactContext to call the RCTLog JS module

Emily Janzer 5ff9ae4a46 Refactor reloadJSFromServer to use a callback internally
Summary:
This is step 3 in creating a new DevSupportManager with a better async API for loading the JS bundle from Metro.

Right now DevSupportManagerImpl calls a method on its ReactInstanceManagerDevHelper delegate when the JS bundle is done being downloaded from the server. However, I want to move to a callback-based method for bridgeless mode (similar to packager status). In this diff, I'm adding a protected method that uses a callback, and then calling that from `reloadJSFromServer` with a callback that calls the delegate, to preserve existing behavior.

Ramanpreet Nara c20963e11c Unregister JSDevSupport from DebugCorePackage
Summary:
## Problem
`DebugCorePackage` is a `TurboReactPackage`. To register a `TurboReactPackage`s NativeModules, the `NativeModuleRegistryBuilder` loops over all `ReactModuleInfo`s in the package's auto-generated `ReactModuleInfo` list. This list is generated from the `ReactModuleList` annotation of the package using our annotation processors. Because `JSDevSupport` was in its package's `ReactModuleList` annotation, we generated a `ReactModuleInfo` object for it. Therefore, `NativeModuleRegistryBuilder` registered `JSDevSupport` twice (once in `DebugCorePackage` and twice in `Fb4aReactPackage`).

## How did this work before?
`JSDevSupport` was always a part of the `ReactModuleList` annotation of `DebugCorePackage`. However, before D18974084 landed, there were two key things that made this work:
1. `DebugCorePackage` was a `LazyReactPackage`,
2. The `DebugCorePackage.getNativeModules()` did not return a `ModuleHolder` for `JSDevSupport`.

For `LazyReactPackage`s, `NativeModuleRegistryBuilder` calls `LazyReactPackage.getNativeModuleIterator()` to register NativeModules. The iterator returned from `LazyReactPackage.getNativeModuleIterator()`, in this case, loops over the NativeModules returned from `DebugCorePackage.getNativeModules()`. Therefore, we don't register any NativeModules that aren't in `DebugCorePackage.getNativeModules()`. Since `DebugCorePackage.getNativeModules()` didn't contain `JSDevSupport`, it wasn't registered for the second time.

Rick Hanlon e272089524 Add NativeLogBox module on Android
Summary:
This diff adds a NativeLogBox module implementation on Android to manage rendering LogBox the way we render RedBox, except rendering a React Native component instead of a native view.

The strategy here is:
- initialize: will create a React rootview and render it.
- show: will add the rootview to a dialog and display the dialog.
- hide: will remove the rootview from it's parent, dismiss the dialog, and release the reference to the activity to prevent leaks.

Most of this is copied from the way RedBox works, the difference here is that we eagerly initialize the rootview with the `initialize` function so that it's warm by the time the dialog needs to render.

Emily Janzer e7f6210d5d Don't attempt to connect to React devtools every 2s
Summary:
When testing out the NetworkOverlay, I noticed that we were creating a lot of WebSocket connections for localhost:8097. Rick found that this is because we're trying to connect to React devtools every 2 seconds: https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/master/packages/react-devtools-core/src/backend.js#L67 and it appears we create a new WebSocket every time.

Dan suggested that we use opening the dev menu as a trigger for attempting to connect to React devtools. This diff uses RCTNativeAppEventEmitter to emit an event from native when the dev menu/dialog is shown, and listening to that event in JS to attempt to connect to devtools.

I'm also making the change of passing in a websocket instead of just passing in the host + port; this way it will only attempt to connect once on each call to `connectToDevTools` (otherwise, we would attempt to reconnect every 2 seconds as soon as the dev menu is opened, and then the next time the menu is opened we'd so start that *again*, and so on - I could have it keep track of whether it's already connecting and avoid doing it again, but this is easier and should be sufficient, I think).

We should probably also update the suggested troubleshooting tips on the devtools page to reflect this change, so that people don't get confused.

Janic Duplessis cc068b0551 Export the DevSettings module, add addMenuItem method (#25848)
Summary:
I wanted to configure the RN dev menu without having to write native code. This is pretty useful in a greenfield app since it avoids having to write a custom native module for both platforms (and might enable the feature for expo too).

This ended up a bit more involved than planned since callbacks can only be called once. I needed to convert the `DevSettings` module to a `NativeEventEmitter` and use events when buttons are clicked. This means creating a JS wrapper for it. Currently it does not export all methods, they can be added in follow ups as needed.

More concretely:

* For clean installs, it's enabled by default. (You can opt out at any time via the dev menu.)

* For updated DEV apps (on device or simulator), it flips from disabled to enabled **but only if you never touched the setting before**.

* If you previously explicitly enabled and/or later disabled it, we keep your previous setting.

Dan Abramov a52e6d1dbb Unify "Hot Reloading" and "Reload-on-Save" into "Fast Refresh"
Summary:
We have too many options in the Dev Menu, and they're really hard to pick from. They're also somewhat conflicting. This replaces two menu choices that have a similar purpose (faster iteration cycle) with one.

"Fast Refresh" tries to only update the affected modules, but falls back to doing a full reload if the update can't be handled by the React components.

If for some reason you prefer the "Reload-on-Save" behavior, please:

- Reach out to me so I can learn more about your use case.
- As a workaround, you can add `if (__DEV__) require.Refresh.forceFullRefresh = true` to your app's entry point to always do a full refresh.

Also note that I only removed the user-facing part of "Reload-on-Save". So if you have automation depending on it, that's gonna keep working.

I moved it above Systrace since it's a more generic feature.

As a total aside nit, I renamed "Enable Inspector" and "Disable Inspector" to "Show Inspector" and "Hide Inspector" because... that's what those options do, really.

Dan Abramov 1f04ff580d Make "Enable Hot Reloading" Instant
Summary:
As we saw in D15947985, and later traced down to D5623623, the `hot` option isn't used by Metro anymore. The relevant transforms _always_ run in DEV regardless of the option.

Given that, it doesn't make sense that enabling or disabling Hot Reloading forces a full refresh. This significantly raises the usage barrier because **currently, you might have to wait ~20 seconds (on a large app) to just start using Hot Reloading when you're already in the middle of some screen.** So you just end up not using it.

This diff changes enabling/disabling Hot Reloading to be _instant_.

Here's how it works:

1. Now we always send the necessary info to the client via the new `HMRClient.setup()` function. It creates a Metro HMR client instance, but only actually sets up the socket if Hot Reloading is on.

2. The "Enable Hot Reloading" menu no longer forces a reload. Instead, it calls `HMRClient.enable()` which lazily sets up a socket (at most once).

3. The "Disable Hot Reloading" menu also doesn't trigger a refresh now. Instead, it calls `HMRClient.disable()`. We don't actually tear down the socket here because it's a pain to deal with race conditions and such. Instead, we keep the connection — but we _ignore the updates_ that come in while we're disabled.

4. As a result, it is possible to enable and disable it many times during a single session. (Updates while disabled would be ignored — which has a risk of making your running app inconsistent — but I'd argue it's expected and is worth it. You can always save a particular file to force it to update once the mode is on.)

5. In order to support "ignoring" updates, Metro's `HMRClient` (not to be confused with RN's module) now supports a `shouldApplyUpdates` field. The RN module uses it to disable handling updates when the mode is off.

6. In case there is an error that makes hot reloading unavailable (such as the server disconnecting), we surface the error only if the mode is on. If the mode is off, we stash the error message in the `_hmrUnavailableReason` variable, and display it next time you try to enable Hot Reloading.

Nate 995b4d3049 Android Fix for 9145: No longer hard code build port (#23616)
Summary:
### Problem

According to https://github.com/facebook/react-native/issues/9145, the `--port` setting is not respected when executing `react-native run-android`. The templates that report things like what port the dev server runs on are hard coded as well.

### Solution

This commit replaces the hardcoded instances of port 8081 on Android with a build configuration property. This allows setting of the port React Native Android connects to for the local build server.

For this change to work, there must also be an update to the react native CLI to pass along this setting:

https://github.com/react-native-community/react-native-cli/compare/master...nhunzaker:9145-android-no-port-hardcode-cli

To avoid some noise on their end, I figured I wouldn't submit a PR until it's this approach is deemed workable.

Moti Zilberman a05e9f8e09 Android: Sort modules by ID when serializing delta bundle
Summary:
Fixes redbox/yellowbox symbolication when the Java delta client is enabled. Previously the modules would get concatenated in a nondeterministic order (owing to Metro's parallelism) which differed from their order in the source map, where they're explicitly sorted by module ID.

This diff changes the data structure holding modules in memory from a `LinkedHashMap` (which iterates in insertion order) to a `TreeMap` (which iterates in key order).

Summary:
Cleanup RedBox messages and stack traces. This PR consists of 2 changes (I'm good with splitting them up if you'd like):

- [general] filter out some of the internal callsites from the symbolicated stack (I thought about using monospace font for title with code frame, but it looks weird)
- [ios][android] strip ANSI characters (coming from colored Babel code frame) from the error message

I think it's ok to strip it inside native handlers so we can still have a colorful code frame in the terminal output.
