Tommy Nguyen 260bcf7f1b fix: limit diagnostics width output by hermesc (#37531)
Summary:
Limit diagnostics width output by `hermesc` as they may cause slowdowns or even crashes in Gradle/Xcode when a minified bundle is used as input. This occurs because Hermes is unable to determine the terminal width when executed by Gradle/Xcode, and falls back to "unlimited". If the input is a minified bundle, Hermes will output the whole bundle for each warning.

Douglas Lowder 615d9aefc4 Read Maven group from GROUP property (#37204)
Summary:
The [React Native TV repo](https://github.com/react-native-tvos/react-native-tvos) shares most of the same Android code as the core repo. Beginning in 0.71, it needs to also publish Android Maven artifacts for the `react-android` and `hermes-android` libraries.

In order to avoid conflicts, it needs to publish the artifacts to a different group name. However, `react-native-gradle-plugin` uses a hardcoded group name (`com.facebook.react`).

Solution: read the group name from the existing `GROUP` property in `ReactAndroid/gradle.properties`.

## Changelog:

[Android] [Fixed] - read GROUP name in gradle-plugin dependency code

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/37204

Test Plan:
- Android unit tests have been added for the new code and new method in `DependencyUtils.kt`.
- Existing tests should pass
- The new code defaults to the correct group (`com.facebook.react`) so no functional change is expected in the core repo.

Nicola Corti b360109e05 RNGP - Add apiVersion/languageVersion to 1.5 (#36311)
Summary:
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/36311

Currently, we get the apiVersion/languageVersion for Kotlin that Gradle carries over.
So what happens is that on older version of Gradle, we try to compile RNGP with older versions of Kotlin.

There we have some functions missing (like `.uppercase()`) and the user will fail to build because of this.

Here I'm setting `apiVersion` and `languageVersion` to Kotlin 1.5. Even if we compile with Kotlin 1.7,
the compiler will make sure our code is compatible to be executed in a Kotlin 1.5 environment.

Nicola Corti 323d8b1432 RNGP - GenerateCodegenSchemaTask should exclude all of **/build/[generated|intermediate]**
Summary:
I'm widening the exclude for GenerateCodegenSchemaTask input files.

This is needed before we can migrate to Gradle 8.x as one of the build warning we have is
now converted to a build failure.

The reason why this is needed is because GenerateCodegenSchemaTask ends up picking up a file that
gets generated by `react-native bundle`. While the file is ignored by the Codegen, Gradle
detects a clash between the two tasks.

This solves the issue completely.

Nicola Corti 0487108461 RNGP - Monorepo: Make sure libraries are honoring codegenDir provided by app (#36128)
Summary:
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/36128

This commit fixes a problem which is making harder to use the New Architecture in monorepos.
Specifically if a user specifies a `codegenDir` in their app, libraries should honor it.
This is not the case today.

The fix is to register an extension on the root project which will "pass" values from app
to libraries.

I've also cleaned up some of the logic in `readPackageJsonFile` function restricting
the access to those functions only to `.root` which is the only field they're accessing.

shivenmian bb02ccf13f RNGP - fix: use relative paths for gradle exec invocations (#36080)
Summary:
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/36080

For Android release builds on Windows, gradle release build fails if there are spaces in path (https://github.com/facebook/react-native/issues/34878). This is due to gradle improperly handling arguments with spaces (this is also [an open issue](https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/6072) on Gradle). Since the Hermes compilation and other Gradle exec invocations involve arguments which will contain spaces (if there are spaces in your path), this also means it is hard to get around this by simply escaping the spaces (eg: by using double quotes), since these arguments are not properly handled by Gradle itself.

As a workaround, this PR uses relative paths for all Gradle commands invoked for Android. As long as there aren't any spaces in the react-native directory structure (i.e this repo), this fix should work.

## Changelog

[Android][Fixed] - Used relative paths for gradle commands

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/36076

Test Plan: `npx react-native run-android` builds and runs the app successfully on Android device, when run inside an RN0711 project with a path containing spaces (and with the changes in this PR applied) on Windows. This includes release builds (i.e with the `--variant=release` flag).

I've picked those they are the most layout friendly when building from source, but we can discuss if we want others.

Riccardo Cipolleschi ae3dd54fae Fix forward: Filtering platform in codegen (#34897)
Summary:
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/34897

This [commit](https://github.com/facebook/react-native/commit/7680bdeb4f96a8092393372a59c77a9d7b729cae) added the possibility to create Codegen specs that are platform specific.
However, it also modifies how the codegen is invoked and we need to publish a new version of the `react-native-codegen` package on NPM before we can use that feature.

## Changelog:
[General][Fixed] - Remove usage of the codegen spec filtering until we publish a new version of the codegen.

Riccardo Cipolleschi 7680bdeb4f Implement filtering for platform specific spec files
Summary:
This diff helps the library maintainer to keep their spec file platform specific if some specs make no sense in one platform or in the other.

We are filtering the spec files when we need to create the Schema.

The diff modifies also the call sites in the `scripts` (for iOS) and in the `gradle-plugin` (for Android).

It also adds tests for the new functions in the CLI.

The change is completely additive and it should not change any pre-existing behaviour.

Summary:
I'm adding a series of excludes to the `GenerateCodegenSchemaTaskTest`.
The reason is that RN Tester is setting `packages/rn-tester` as the root of the
specs as they're not isolated.

This is causing the Gradle task to crawl inside the `android/app/build` folder
where we store sourcemaps and other files that have .js files. As those files
gets updated when you build, the codegen task gets invalidated over and over

JoseLion 7fcdb9d9d8 fix(android): Append .exe to hermesc binary path for Windows users (#34151)
Summary:
Resolves https://github.com/facebook/react-native/issues/34116.

In a nutshell, the problem was a missing `.exe` extension on the `hermesc` binary path when running on Windows OS. The missing extension causes the method `.exists()` of the File instance to always return false, so none of the conditions ever met and an error was thrown whenever a release build with Hermes enabled was run on Windows. More details can be found in the comments on the above issues.

[Android] [Fixed] - Fix error of release builds with Hermes enabled for Windows users

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/34151

Test Plan:
### Reproduce

Changes on Gradle scrips are better tested on an actual application. To reproduce the issue you can:
1. Create or reuse a React Native application with version `v0.69.1` on a Windows machine
2. Enable Hermes on Android following the steps on the [documentation](https://reactnative.dev/docs/hermes#enabling-hermes)
3. Clean the build folder: `cd android && ./gradlew clean`
4. Bundle the JS and assets for a release version: `./gradlew bundleReleaseJsAndAssets`
5. The build fails with the following error:
```shell
Execution failed for task ':app:bundleReleaseJsAndAssets'.
> java.lang.Exception: Couldn't determine Hermesc location. Please set `project.ext.react.hermesCommand` to the path of the hermesc binary file. node_modules/react-native/sdks/hermesc/%OS-BIN%/hermesc
```

### Test the changes

Follow the same steps above using the fix on this PR and the error should disappear 🙂

Summary:
I've realized that the gradle plugin is currently looking at `.js` files for task re-execution. This means that, while the *.ts would still be considered when the codegen is invoked, an edit on one of those file, won't retrigger the codegen on Android.

This change fixes it so that we consider both `*.ts` and `*.js` files.

Nicola Corti 5f3c5aa529 Extend the React Native Gradle plugin to accept a config from package.json
Summary:
This extends the Gradle plugin to allow configuration for `codegenConfig` from the
`package.json` that lives in one of the root folder.

There are a couple of points open for discussion. The most important one
is that now we're moving from absolute paths to relative paths, from the
package.json location. I'm not entirely sure this will work correctly
for users in monorepos, so we might consider this carefully.

Moreover, I've moved the `codegenJavaPackageName` to be `android.javaPackageName`.
Happy to discuss this further.

Nicola Corti c11785b90d Update the hermesc output to be inside the $buildDir
Summary:
Currently, we build Hermes by specifying the Cmake flag `-B ./hermes`. That means
that the output out the build is going to be placed along side the source code.

This is fine, as long as the user doesn't use the `REACT_NATIVE_OVERRIDE_HERMES_DIR`,
which is used inside the Hermes CI. In that case, the source location of Hermes can be
changed, leading to scenarios where `hermesc` can't be found.

Here I'm changing the flag to be `-B $buildDir/hermes`. Therefore the build output
will always be located within the `./ReactAndroid/hermes-engine/build` folder.
This is a more robust solution as the build output will be encapsulated within the
`build/` folder.
