David VaccaandFacebook GitHub Bot 6d4fff2e5c Fix android view dimensions
Summary:
This diff fixes the Android View dimensions in VR

PixelUtil.toSPFromPixel and PixelUtil.getDisplayMetricDensity() are both using getScreenDisplayMetrics() to perform conversion of dimensions. This is not correct because we should take into consideration the density of the Context / Activity instead of the Screen. This problem didn't raise before in Fabric Android because it seems that android OS on phones usually share the scale between the screen and the Activity?

These two methods are only used in Fabric and they were introduced by D9583972 (https://github.com/facebook/react-native/commit/5c0da011cbaa788c52519f8091157ca6d87d8abb) and D9173758 (https://github.com/facebook/react-native/commit/8b5e3fc16b1e58441318b6ada629dcff572dd120)

As part of this diff I'm also deleting the method toSPFromPixel in favor of toDIPFromPixel because I noticed the usages of these methods are meant to use toDIPFromPixel()

Summary:
Sometimes ```hasActiveCatalystInstance()``` is used to check if it's safe to access the CatalystInstance, which will still crash in Venice.

Previously we mitigate this by changing ```reactContext.hasActiveCatalystInstance()``` to ```reactContext.hasActiveCatalystInstance() || reactContext.isBridgeless()```.

To solve this for all and good the plan is:
1, Rename ```hasActiveCatalystInstance()``` to ```hasActiveReactInstance()``` so it won't sounds like CatalystInstance-only.
2, Implement hasActiveReactInstance() for Venice. D27343867
3, Remove previous mitigation. D27343952

Joshua GrossandFacebook GitHub Bot 00959ffd6b Destroy Fabric State objects earlier in Java
Summary:
There are races between BackgroundExecutor and Fabric/View teardown, where, because of the way things are set up currently, a View will strongly retain a pointer into some native State object which can keep a host of other objects alive in C++, even after stopSurface, and even after RN itself starts tearing down.

To alleviate this, we more aggressively clear State from Java, without waiting for Java GC: 1) on stopSurface, 2) whenever a State object is stale from Java's perspective.

This should allow us to keep all common updateState semantics, while only introducing a new edge-case that stateWrapper can be destroyed during mounting if stopSurface happens at the same time. In those cases, checking for NPEs should be sufficient.

The possible race condition only really happens with updateState, so it's easier to check for. There should practically be no cases where there's a race between `stopSurface` and `getState`, because `getState` is only really called around state updates and view preallocation, and never after; we still check for NPEs in those cases, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Emily JanzerandFacebook GitHub Bot b352e2da81 Create a ClickableSpan for nested Text components
Summary:
Right now nested Text components are not accessible on Android. This is because we only create a native ReactTextView for the parent component; the styling and touch handling for the child component are handled using spans. In order for TalkBack to announce the link, we need to linkify the text using a ClickableSpan.

This diff adds ReactClickableSpan, which TextLayoutManager uses to linkify a span of text when its corresponding React component has `accessibilityRole="link"`. For example:

  <Text>
    A paragraph with some
    <Text accessible={true} accessibilityRole="link" onPress={onPress} onClick={onClick}>links</Text>
    surrounded by other text.
  </Text>

With this diff, the child Text component will be announced by TalkBack ('links available') and exposed as an option in the context menu. Clicking on the link in the context menu fires the Text component's onClick, which we're explicitly forwarding to onPress in Text.js (for now - ideally this would probably use a separate event, but that would involve wiring it up in the renderer as well).

ReactClickableSpan also applies text color from React if it exists; this is to override the default Android link styling (teal + underline).

Summary:
This fixes TextInput measurement caching. Previously we were not setting the correct Spannable in the cache; we needed to additional Spans to it to indicate font size and other attributes.

This brings Fabric closer to how non-Fabric was measuring Spannables for TextInputs (see ReactTextInputShadowNode.java).

This should fix a few crashes and will be most noticeable with dynamically-sized multiline textinputs where the number of lines changes over time.

This also allows us to transmit less data from C++ to Java in the majority of cases.

Joshua GrossandFacebook GitHub Bot d602c51996 Simplify TextInput measurements
Summary:
Simplify the TextInput measurement mechanism.

Now, data only flows from JS->C++->Java and from Java->JS. C++ passes along AttributedStrings from JS if JS updates, and otherwise Java maintains the only source of truth.

Previously we tried to keep all three in sync. This was complicated, slow, and even lead to some crashes.

This feels a bit hacky but I believe it's the simplest way to achieve this short-term. Ideally, we would use something like `AttributedStringBox` and pass that to State from Java,
but currently everything passed through the State system from Java must be serializable as `folly::dynamic`. So, instead, we just cache one Spannable per TextInput component and
use ReactTag as the cache identifier for lookup.

An interesting side-effect is that `measure` could race with TextInput updates, but the race condition favors measuring the latest text, not outdated values.

Followups:

- Can we do this without copying the EditText Spannable on every keystroke? Maybe this approach is too aggressive, but I don't want a background thread measuring a Spannable as it's being mutated.
- Do we need to support measuring Attachments?
- How can we clean up this API? It should work for now, but feels a little hacky.

The impact of this bug is not that high because in the conversion to int we were using Math.ceil(), which was already rounding the result to the next pixel.

Tim YungandFacebook GitHub Bot dda7f82261 RN: Shrinkwrap Text Layout (Android)
Summary:
When text is in a constrained parent view using `maxWidth`, long text may wrap. When the text wraps, the final width is dependent on the word breaking strategy and text content. This means that the text width is not necessarily `maxWidth`.

However, the current way that we compute text layout does not shrinkwrap the text width as much as possible. This leads to visual gaps to the end-side of wrapped text.

This changes the text layout slightly so that we use the length of the longest line.

This bug only exists on Android. After this change, Android behaves like iOS.

David VaccaandFacebook Github Bot c3d0729550 Fix rendering of TextInput in Catalyst App
Summary:
This diff fixes the rendering of the TextInput RNTester examples in catalyst app.
The root cause of the bug is that we were parsing the props of the text using the TextAttributeProps class, this is incorrect because TextAttributeProps is a holder of the C++ TextAttributes and not TextProps, but the name is confusing.
As a consecuence there was some mistmaches of types during parsing and that was throwing an exception in some examples.

I created the task T63643819 to refactor these classes to make this cleaner.
I'll be working on T63643819 next week, now I want to unblock this bug.

Tom UnderhillandFacebook Github Bot f4de45800f PlatformColor implementations for iOS and Android (#27908)
Summary:
This Pull Request implements the PlatformColor proposal discussed at https://github.com/react-native-community/discussions-and-proposals/issues/126. The changes include implementations for iOS and Android as well as a PlatformColorExample page in RNTester.

Every native platform has the concept of system defined colors. Instead of specifying a concrete color value the app developer can choose a system color that varies in appearance depending on a system theme settings such Light or Dark mode, accessibility settings such as a High Contrast mode, and even its context within the app such as the traits of a containing view or window.

The proposal is to add true platform color support to react-native by extending the Flow type `ColorValue` with platform specific color type information for each platform and to provide a convenience function, `PlatformColor()`, for instantiating platform specific ColorValue objects.

`PlatformColor(name [, name ...])` where `name` is a system color name on a given platform. If `name` does not resolve to a color for any reason, the next `name` in the argument list will be resolved and so on. If none of the names resolve, a RedBox error occurs. This allows a latest platform color to be used, but if running on an older platform it will fallback to a previous version.
 The function returns a `ColorValue`.

On iOS the values of `name` is one of the iOS [UI Element](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/uicolor/ui_element_colors) or [Standard Color](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/uicolor/standard_colors) names such as `labelColor` or `systemFillColor`.

On Android the `name` values are the same [app resource](https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/providing-resources) path strings that can be expressed in XML:
XML Resource:
`@ [<package_name>:]<resource_type>/<resource_name>`
Style reference from current theme:
`?[<package_name>:][<resource_type>/]<resource_name>`
For example:
- `?android:colorError`
- `?android:attr/colorError`
- `?attr/colorPrimary`
- `?colorPrimaryDark`
- `android:color/holo_purple`
- `color/catalyst_redbox_background`

On iOS another type of system dynamic color can be created using the `IOSDynamicColor({dark: <color>, light:<color>})` method. The arguments are a tuple containing custom colors for light and dark themes. Such dynamic colors are useful for branding colors or other app specific colors that still respond automatically to system setting changes.

Example: `<View style={{ backgroundColor: IOSDynamicColor({light: 'black', dark: 'white'}) }}/>`

Other platforms could create platform specific functions similar to `IOSDynamicColor` per the needs of those platforms. For example, macOS has a similar dynamic color type that could be implemented via a `MacDynamicColor`. On Windows custom brushes that tint or otherwise modify a system brush could be created using a platform specific method.
